Hawaii Week 2: More fun in Oahu

Sunday- On Sunday, we just relaxed and caught up on general conference. Yes we are sinners and didn't watch all of conference, don't judge us haha. We didn't have time to watch the Saturday sessions of conference because we were racing around trying to get ready for our trip, clean the house, and do our taxes before we left. Oh well we watched them eventually so I don't feel too bad.

Monday- We spent most of the day working because it was a busy day at work for both of us. Then around 1:30 pm we headed off to Kahana State Park to hike the Nakoa Loop Hiking Trail. This was a beautiful hike through the Rain Forest. Even though Matt and I thought the scenery was stunningly gorgeous, it wasn't an easy hike. We had to trudge through deep mud, got scratched by overgrown bushes, and even had to crawl under thick branches from trees. The trail even lead into a raging river (seriously). I felt like we were on an episode of Survivor at times. I also got eaten alive by Mosquitoes. We didn't snap very many pictures because whenever we stood still the swarms of Mosquitoes would move in. Everyone in my family will probably laugh because they know how Mosquitoes are attracted to me even if I wear bug spray. When we made it out of the jungle it looked like I had gotten small pox or something from all the bug bites. We counted 37! Ouch! Overall we were glad we went because of the views and pretty birds, but if you ever do this hike be prepared for an Indiana Jones like adventure.

The trail lead to the site of some old pill boxes that were used to train soldiers from World War II and the Korean war about fighting in the jungle.

Tuesday- On Tuesday we decided to go to Haleiwa Beach. We rented a surf board for a couple hours and Matt tried to teach me how to surf. I tried, but I was learning on a short board so I couldn't stand up. Matt also had a hard time and only stood up a couple of times. I had fun body boarding though while Matt took over the surf board. After we got tired we headed home. We took a long nap then went to Costco to return our broken body board and then to Outback to eat dinner. Wednesday- We woke up early and drove to Hanauma Bay, but got there too late to get a parking spot. Darn! We then drove to Sandy Beach where Matt did some body boarding. I thought the waves at Pounders were huge, but they were nothing compared to those waves. Matt caught a couple waves then got pounded by one wave that caused his back to crack. After that he decided he better come in before he broke his neck. We then drove to the Pali Lookout to check out the view up there. Afterwards, we drove home to eat lunch and get some work done. We headed out again around 3ish and went to Waimea Bay. We snorkeled and swam with a family of sea turtles. Matt jumped off the big rock. Waimea Bay is probably my favorite beach so far and I loved it there.
This is the view from Pali Lookout

The water clarity wasn't very good, but here is the mama turtle we swam with. The baby and dad were close by.

Thursday- After getting our work in for the day, we headed off to Turtle Bay Resort to snorkel. We started off in the ocean and saw some Octopus for the first time this trip. They were really cool looking, but we couldn't get a picture of either of them (we forgot our camera). After swimming in the ocean for awhile we headed over to Kulima Cove. It reminded us of a giant swimming pool with very calm waters. It was very popular among those staying at Turtle Bay, who were hanging out around there. I don't blame them it was gorgeous in that area. After we swam in the bay for awhile we decided to hike 1/2 mile to Kawela Bay which is a secluded beach close to Turtle Bay. This is where some of Blue Crush, and scenes from Lost were filmed. There we saw a giant sea turtle right along the shoreline. Once he went back into the water we tried to follow him with our snorkels, but lost him because the water was too cloudy. We spent some more time swimming around there then decided to head home. Later that day we got some Thai Food at Opals Tai truck and it was delicious. We might have to go back next week.

Friday- On Friday we woke up at 6:45 am to get to Hanauma Bay. Getting up earlier paid off and we finally got a parking spot. Yay! We watched the cheesy video then headed down to the beach. We snorkeled for about 2 hours then headed out. On the way home we went to the Halona Blowhole lookout to see the waves crash across the rock. We came home, got some work done then took a nap. After our nap, Matt got a haircut and we went to the grocery store. I had fun watching a dog chase some wild chickens around. Chickens are everywhere here just roaming around. It's kind of weird seeing them in random locations around Hawaii.

This is the view of hanama bay. We also took pictures of some fish snorkeling but didn't want to bore everyone with pictures of fish.

Saturday- On Saturday we went to the swap meet at Aloha Stadium. It's basically just a place where people sell some cheap souvenirs. We thought it was worth checking out. I got a cute swim suit cover-up and some jewelry. After the swap meet we went to hike the Makapu'u lighthouse. It was a pretty short hike which was fortunate because it was extremely hot. It was really pretty at the top though and had some amazing views of the blue ocean below. After the hike we were starving so we headed over to Costco to eat. We mostly wanted to go back to Costco to get some more pineapple. It's incredible here and we've been eating as much of it as we can. That and chocolate Macadamia nuts. Yum!

This was the view from the top of our hike. The water was a gorgeous clear blue.

Sunday-
Today we tried to go to sacrament meeting, but I guess it was stake conference this week so no one was at the building when we arrived. So instead we decided to walk along the beach (Moku'leia) where Lost was filmed. We actually recognized some of the scenery from the show. Then we came home and just had a relaxing day.
