Unlike most souvenir stands he made most of what he sold, and showed us a ton of news articles that had been written about him and his crafty family. He offered us some Agua de pipa (Pipe water, or Straw water, not sure why the heck it's called that it was coconut milk), and showed us around his place. He was delighted that I spoke Spanish, because his English was pretty much non-existent.
He had a pet toucan and a few parrots, and let us hold them. The toucan was really cool, it seemed like it had it's own personality (weird from a bird). The toucan was a male, and loved it when women talked to him, and fed him. He was also pretty playful.
The souvenir shop had by far the cheapest prices we saw in Costa Rica, so we decided to buy a lot of stuff. We bought these awesome wooden placemats (they're a little hard to describe, so I'll upload a picture later), some wooden necklaces, and an awesome Salad bowl with some Salsa dishes for us and for my mom for Mother's day. We probably could have bargained the guy down a bit, but he was so nice, and the prices were so much lower than anywhere else, we didn't even bother.
Next we went to the zip line tour.
Zip Line Tours are a pretty big thing in Costa Rica. They're literally all over the country. On our first date Rachel and I zip lined down the world's highest zip line Park City.
We decided to do a tour near the Volcano. Again, we had a private tour, this time four employees with two tourists. Again, they were excited that I spoke Spanish, and kept saying Mexican phrases that they'd heard from TV shows to see my reaction. We drove up on this huge four wheel drive truck on this cruddy dirt road for a few miles, and started zip lining our way down.
Most of the cables were a few hundred feet apart, but there were a couple really fun ones that were about a half a kilometer apart. The best was the tarzan swing. They take you 40-50 feet up on a platform, strap you onto some cables, and let you go. I screamed like a little girl...It didn't seem to phase Rachel.
The tour was great. On our first date Rachel and I did the world's tallest (or so they say) zip line in Park City, that goes incredibly fast. We were expecting something similar, and were slightly disappointed, because it was less of a thrill than what we imagined. (Well for Rachel anyways, I still found it pretty thrilling)
Looking back we should have probably done the zip line tour that Paul and Jill recommended to us, but the lady at the tree houses hotel was pretty adamant that this was the better tour (the tour we did didn't even exist when Paul and Jill went), so we gave it a shot.
After the zip line tour we had to drive to Manuel Antonio (An area on the coast with a beautiful rainforest). It was a long drive, but there were some beautiful sights of the beach and rainforest.
