Day 6: Horseback Ride

It had been a while since either Rachel or I had been horseback riding. I remember how I used to love riding horses so we gave it a shot. We weren't surprised to find that yet again we would be getting a private tour. The drove us out into a farm-type area, and showed us the horses. Immediately the guide got upset with the helper that brought out the horses because he brought out a horse for huge people (she said 150+ Kilos).

The ride was about an hour long to the waterfall, but you could tell the guide had other stuff to do because she kept making the horses go faster. The horses were extremely well trained (they didn't even have bits), and were very well tempered, but liked trotting instead of walking (which really hurts your butt). After getting to the stopping point it was a short hike to the waterfalls.

Both waterfalls were incredible:

But our favorite was the one we got to swim in. The water wasn't too cold (maybe around 70 degrees), and was very refreshing. You can't really tell how powerful the water was, but it's pretty hard to stand directly underneath the water. After a bit it'll knock you down. We swam for about a half hour, and headed to lunch.

Lunch was good. It was another "Comida Typica" made by our tour guides mother. Rachel was impressed that I knew immediately by looking at the cook that she was Christian. In Latin American countries the vast majority of active Christian (non-catholic, non-LDS) women wear dresses every day. We talked to her a bit about her church, and were on our way back to our hotel room.

We then spent a good chunk of the day lounging around in our hotel. We tried the pool, which had a beautiful view of the ocean and rainforest, and sat in the hot tub. The hot tub was a little weird, because when we got out we had this weird green scum all over us (it was THICK too!). Once we had our fill of the scum bath, we went back to our room.

Right after we got back to our hotel room we experienced our first Costa Rican rain. It came all of a sudden and was very powerful, and disappeared as sudden as it had come. It reminded me of Hawaii.

We watched movies during the rain storm. It was really nice spending so much quality time with Rachel. It seems like we don't get to spend quite as much time together as we would like.
